Sunil Mathai is a graduate of the Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa and is Counsel with the Ministry of the Attorney General, Civil Law Division. Sunil is an adjunct professor at the Osgoode Professional Development LLM program teaching a course in Public and Constitutional Law.
Sunil’s practice primarily focuses on public law civil litigation with a specialty in administrative law, regulatory negligence, police and prosecution law and First Nation justice issues. Sunil has appeared before all levels of court including the Divisional Court, Federal Court of Appeal, the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada. At the Supreme Court of Canada, Sunil has appeared as counsel on Hill v. Hamilton Wentworth Police, Penner v. Niagara Police Service, Schaeffer v. Wood and HMQRBC v. PMI USA. In recognition of his work in public law, Sunil was awarded the 2014 legal excellence award by the South Asian Bar Association.
