Tuition, Fees and Financial Assistance
Tuition and Fees
Tuition and fees for the Professional LLM are currently $20,153, payable in six equal installments throughout the program. In
addition, a $15 administrative charge is levied by the Faculty of Graduate Studies each term. Fees include the required course materials, provided in a balance of hard and electronic formats. Some materials may only be available in electronic format. An additional charge will apply to any shipping of materials outside of Canada. Light meals are provided for students attending classes in person in Toronto.
All those admitted to the Professional LLM who elect to attend via live videoconference (where possible), will be required to purchase the hardware and software necesssary from OPD at a cost of $600 CDN + all applicable taxes (includes shipping costs). Please note that the cost of IT equipment and software is subject to change each academic year.
Tuition fees are set by the York University Board of Governors and are subject to change at any time. Students who take
longer than six terms to complete their program may be subject to additional tuition charges. The amount above is the current estimated cost for LLM students entering York University on September 13, 2010 or later.
Financial Assistance
Students must successfully complete one term before applying for an OPD bursary. Osgoode’s financial support is primarily for full-time students. The amount available for bursaries for professional students is very limited. Students who receive bursaries in one term will not necessarily receive bursaries in subsequent terms. Bursaries are awarded on the basis of financial need.
The Professor Marilyn L. Pilkington Award
Professor Marilyn L. Pilkington, the Dean of Osgoode Hall Law School from 1993 to 1998 and founder of Osgoode Professional Development, established this award to be given to a student pursuing studies in the Professional LLM program. The award will be granted to a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person, resident of Ontario, on the basis of academic achievement and financial need. Preference will be given to a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School.
Note: Applications for this award are only accepted during the Fall term
Tuition and Education Tax Credit
Students may qualify for a tax credit for tuition fees and education amounts. The amount of the tax credit depends on each student's taxable income. For information, please consult Canada Revenue Agency's Information on Students and Income Tax.
Academic Fee Waivers for Senior Citizens
Academic fees at the domestic fee rate will be waived for all Canadian citizens or permanent residents 60 years of age or older by the first day of the academic session in which they wish to enrol (i.e. by May 1 for the summer session or September 1 for the fall/winter session), whether in a degree course, as visiting students or auditors. The fee waiver is capped for senior citizens to the level of tuition fees assigned to domestic, non-professional undergraduate arts, science and other programs as defined in the tuition fee guidelines from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. The tuition fee waiver for an eligible senior citizen is restricted to a maximum of one undergraduate or graduate degree.
You do not need to apply for this benefit. It is granted automatically and the credit is applied to your student account. Fee waivers are considered by the government to be a taxable benefit; the appropriate tax forms from York will be available on the web by February 28 each year.
Eligible senior citizen tuition waiver students are required to pay all other fees attached to a course or program, or required during the process of registration (including centrally collected ancillary fees, fees approved by student referenda, material fees, financial penalties etc.).
Grandparenting Provision: All students in mid-program, up to and including those enrolled in Summer 2008, will be grandparented until the completion of the degree in which they are currently enrolled, as long as they have maintained continuous registration.
