Applying


Most specializations run on a 1 or 2 year cycle.  The General program can be
commenced in September, January or May.  For more information, see Program Start Dates.

Requirements


To be considered for admission, you must meet the following requirements:

  • An LLB or JD degree with an overall B average (or equivalent). Applicants
    with less than a B average in the LLB or JD will be considered provided they also have 5 years or more of relevant practice experience.
  • Proof of language proficiency for applicants who do not meet one of the
    following criteria:


    1. their first language is English; OR

    2. they have completed at least two years of full-time study at an
      accredited university in a country (or institution) where English is
      the only official language of instruction.
 

Candidates without an LLB or JD degree will also be considered provided they have a university degree, a superior academic record and significant work experience related to the specialization for which they have applied. Graduate degree preferred.

Applicants without an LLB are also required to submit a writing sample which best demonstrates their academic ability. Please indicate the context in which the sample was written (e.g., a course paper, a research project/paper). Note: writing samples cannot be returned and should be written in English.


Please note these are minimum requirements and do not guarantee admission to the program.

Notes: (1) All those admitted to the LLM who do not have an LLB/JD and those who have an LLB from outside Canada will be conditionally admitted based on completion of the one-week intensive course Introduction to Canadian Graduate Legal Studies.

(2) Those admitted to the Professional LLM who elect to attend via live videoconference (where applicable) will be required to purchase the hardware and software necessary for participation from OPD at a cost in addition to regular tuition fees.

General LLM is open only to applicants who hold an LLB.

 

Language Proficiency

To fulfill the language proficiency requirement applicants can sit for on of the following tests: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the YELT (York English Language Test). Applicants relying on TOEFL must sit the test that includes the TWE (Test of Written English) component; for TOEFL, the minimum acceptable score is 600 (paper-based) or 250 (computer-based), iBT 100, as well as 5 on the TWE component. Applicants relying on YELT must score in Band 1. Applicants must
arrange to write one of these tests on their own.
