MARY JANE DYKEMAN, BA, LLB, is a partner at the boutique health law firm of Dykeman Dewhirst O'Brien LLP in Toronto. She advises health sector clients on a wide range of matters including mental health, consent, capacity and substitute decision-making, risk management, Board governance, and corporate matters. Along with Kate Dewhirst, she is co-editor of Risk Management in Canadian Health Care and previously of the Canadian Health Law Practice Manual; and a co-author of Canadian Nurses and the Law. Dykeman Dewhirst O'Brien LLP produces the Health Law Prescription Series – workbooks, conferences and on-site training - geared to providing concrete and practical advice to the health sector.
Mary Jane is a frequent speaker and writer on health law issues. She teaches mental health law in the LLM at Osgoode Professional Development (OPD), and is Program Director for OPD's new certificate program in mental health law. She previously taught mental health at Queen's University Faculty of Law. In June 2008, Mary Jane was recognized by OPD for excellence in continuing legal education. She sits as the lawyer member on the research ethics board at Canadian Blood Services in Ottawa, and on the Health Law Executive of the Ontario Bar Association. She has recently been named to the Board of the Anne Johnston Health Station, a community health centre in mid-town Toronto.
