The HON. JUSTICE GARY TROTTER received his LLB from the University of Toronto Law School in 1985.  He subsequently received an LLM from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1987, an MPhil from the University of Cambridge in 1991 and a PhD from Cambridge in 2000. 

Upon being called to the Ontario Bar in 1987, Justice Trotter practiced with the firm of Beard, Winter, in Toronto.  In 1988, Justice Trotter went to the Crown Law Office (Criminal), Ministry of the Attorney General, arguing appeals in the Court of Appeal for Ontario and the Supreme Court of Canada.  During this time, he was a lecturer for many years at the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto and at Queen’s University.

In 2000, Justice Trotter left practice to become an Assistant Professor at Queen’s University, teaching courses on criminal law.  He subsequently became Associate Dean and, for a period of time, the Acting Dean of the Faculty.  Justice Trotter is the author of numerous articles and book chapters, as well as The Law of Bail in Canada, 2nd ed. (Scarb., Ont.: Carswell, 1999), Sentencing and Penal Policy in Canada: Cases and Materials (Toronto: Emond-Montgomery) (with A. Manson and P. Healy), Criminal Law and Procedure-Cases and Materials, 9th ed. (Toronto: Emond-Montgomery, 2004) (with K. Roach and P. Healy) and Learning Canadian Criminal Procedure, 8th ed. (Scarb., Ont.: Carswell, 2005) (with R.J. Delisle and D. Stuart).  From 2001 to 2007, Justice Trotter was an Editor of the Canadian Criminal Cases and the Dominion Law Reports.  He has been a regular presenter at conferences, continuing education programs and judicial education programs. 

Justice Trotter was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice on December 14, 2005.  He was appointed to the Superior Court of Justice on February 20, 2008.
