Obstetric Malpractice

Originally held on June 14, 2011, the archived conference is now available for purchase either as a video stream with downloadable link to materials; or on CD-Rom (audio archive with program materials).

The role of the obstetric care nurse has changed significantly over the past several years. Today, more and more, they find themselves responsible for monitoring complex physiological data especially when caring for high risk patients, staying on top of constantly evolving charting language, using sophisticated medical equipment, and exercising independent judgment when caring for their patients. However, this increased autonomy and responsibility brings with it the potential for greater legal responsibility.

This intensive one-day Osgoode Professional Development course was developed to provide nurses with a comprehensive understanding of their legal responsibilities and risks and how to reduce those risks. A faculty of expert health care practitioners and lawyers will explain what the law is and how it applies to the practice of the professional nurse working in obstetrics. With this information, you’ll be better equipped to assess risks, make sound professional judgments and avoid potential liability traps that exist in your everyday work.

Get the latest information on the common legal risks and dilemmas faced by frontline obstetrical nurses and learn practical ways to reduce exposure. Topics include:

  • The current standard of care in an obstetrical negligence suit
  • The importance of charting and documentation in obstetric care
    - tips for drafting clear and accurate notes
    - late entries and corrections
    - the impact of new technology – electronic charting
