Mental Health Law Symposium

Originally held on October 13, 2011, the archived conference is now available for purchase either as a video stream with downloadable link to materials; or on CD-Rom (audio archive with program materials).

The legal rights and responsibilities in the area of mental health law are numerous and complex. There is no agreement on the best approach for the delivery of mental health services, the type of advocacy support that is most appropriate, or even the best approaches in assessing and managing the risks of violence. Add to that the constantly evolving case law and you have an area where legal, health care, mental health and law enforcement professionals continually struggle to stay on top of their obligations and responsibilities.

Osgoode’s 2nd National Symposium on Mental Health Law was developed to bring together these professionals for a comprehensive one-day update of essential current and emerging legal issues, together with practical legal advice on how to deal with them. Topics covered include: effective police training on mental health issues; protecting the suicidal patient; informed consent and involuntary treatment; children and adolescent mental health issues; Toronto's new Community Youth Court; strategies and tactics to manage risk; sixty-day treatment orders for unfit accused; and assessing and managing the risk of violence in a mental health facility.

Whether you are a health care professional, a lawyer advising a health care institution, or a patient, a social worker or a police or correction officer, don’t miss this opportunity to have your questions answered by some of Canada’s foremost experts in mental health law. You'll walk away from this program with knowledge, tools, strategies and tactics that will help you tackle these complex legal issues in your day-to-day working life.
