Green Buildings

Originally held on April 12, 2011, the archived conference is now available for purchase either as a video stream with downloadable link to materials; or on CD-Rom (audio archive with program materials).

The Canadian construction industry is being transformed by the green building movement. The real estate industry has embraced “green” as a key component of developing, renovating, managing and operating buildings and communities. As real estate owners begin to increasingly demand that their buildings achieve a certain level of LEED certification, legal issues will come to the forefront and must be addressed.

This Osgoode Professional Development program has been designed to bring together real estate owners (public and private), managers, developers, tenants, contractors, design consultants, bankers and regulators to discuss not only the regulatory framework for building green but also to provide an opportunity to hear and be informed about the legal, business and practical implications and obligations that you must know. Topics include:

  • Incorporating LEED into regulatory requirements – the risks and opportunities
  • Cost/benefit allocation of green building features between landlord and tenant
  • Tips to minimize the legal risks of going green
  • Use of standard form construction and design contracts
  • An insurance key risks review – building or retrofitting
  • The risks and rewards of public targets around sustainability performance metrics and green building certification
